Hi, nice to meet you! I'm Daniel, a software engineer and cloud architect focused on AWS and AI. I have been working at PAGNOS as a Senior Cloud Architect since 2019. I'm building and managing our own cloud platform, built from the ground up, where we are serving various multi-tenant SaaS applications reaching thousands of users. (If you have used a coupon or collected loyalty points at a German or European retailer, there's a chance your request graced our lambdas 😉.) We are focusing on high availability, scalability and cost efficiency. Our (and my preferred) stack is all-in serverless on AWS - making the most out of Lambda, DynamoDB and API Gateway (and many more services, of course).

Besides building our own platform, I am also working for our clients on different projects, helping them integrate into our platform, planning and realizing their custom requests or architecting and implementing completely new services with them. (We are talking about formatting an API response through a Lambda function or building a million-dollar software project - anything goes.) What draws me in is the variety and complexity - no two integrations are the same; every customer and feature is unique. Getting a grip on what is really needed and then plunging into the creative process - that's where the fun truly begins. When I've found the right solution that works (and which is a little bit hacky 😉), I am reminded why I'm doing this all day.

How I got Here

I found my passion for programming at a young age and have been coding and hacking ever since. Starting by building my own small games and modding existing ones, I began studying human-computer interaction at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. There, I had the pleasure of working on research projects covering AR and VR, learning about user experience and usability testing and building knowledge in all areas of software engineering. For my bachelor thesis, I designed and implemented an AR application for a pair of glasses, which helped people maintain and repair an industrial rack - that was great fun!

After finishing university, I joined German tech giant Siemens in an IT trainee program, settling at their Digital Industries division. There, I've been maintaining mission-critical legacy SAP solutions while also focusing on the then-new SAP cloud technologies and mobile experiences. When I had my fill of ABAP and Fiori apps, I decided to focus on cloud technologies and joined PAGNOS - where I've been working ever since.

Off the Clock

When I am not working, I love to spend time with my family and teach my two kids about the things I love - dinosaurs being a big part of it 🦖. I'm a big fan of (complex) board games and playing co-op with friends is the most fun. (Primal: The Awakening being a current favorite.)

Music is also a big passion of mine - playing the trombone, piano (and a little bit of everything else) gets the creative juices flowing. When listening to music, I also trend towards the more complex and technical side, like progressive rock, jazz and djent. (Check out Periphery, they are great! Think of metalcore mixed with elements of jazz, progressive rock and a very specific guitar sound.)

It's hard to capture everything about me in a few paragraphs, so here's a list about things that I haven't mentioned yet:

• I love digital gaming (currently playing through the Gothic Remake)
• I love reading fantasy (currently devouring the Witcher books)
• I love tinkering (soldering custom electronics is fun)
• I love watching anime with my wife and reading manga (Berserk is my all-time favorite)
• I love drawing and painting (our walls are covered with my artworks)
• I love playing Magic: The Gathering (but I suck at building my own decks)
